Clearing the way for redevelopment work in the London Borough of Enfield

The McGrath Group successfully cleared 14,000 tonnes of fly tipped waste for the London Borough of Enfield, at the site in Enfield known as Phoenix Wharf.

After being invited to tender by the London Council, we initially made inspections of the site back in July 2018. We proceeded then to complete four smaller clearances demonstrating our comprehensive plant and manpower capabilities before starting on Phoenix Wharf, the largest of the site clearances in December 2019.

The scope of the works included site surveys and enabling activities to clear the site of over 14,000 tonnes of waste that was illegally left at the premises by a skip company, with majority of the waste being processed residual waste.

Special project considerations such as site access, water supply, proximity to electricity pylons and monitoring for dust and other environmental emissions needed to be considered. To overcome these issues the presence of private security and carefully drawn route mapping allowed our vehicles to access the site, which was located via a narrow road and next to a bus garage. The capping of live services was also required to make the site safe and clear before commencement of waste removal.

Over a busy period of three weeks our team worked tirelessly to remove the stockpiles of waste, structures, containers and other equipment, including portacabins and erected steels from the site. The waste was then transported by our bulkers on turnaround to our Barking based MRF which is open 24/7.

Waste site cleared

McGrath’s Business Director Tara Donaghy said, “Using our innovative segregating operating technology we were able to divert all waste from landfill from this clearance project on behalf of the London Council, either by processing the waste for new materials or re-purposing it as RDF for fuel generation.”

The site was left as a safe, flat and clean space ready for extensive future re-development plans that the London Borough of Enfield has for this area.
